Bay Royal
Located just across from Byron Bay's iconic Main Beach, Bay Royal is a seventeen-suite apartment complex that effortlessly blends Neo-Classical and Mediterranean styles. Originally built in the late nineties, its distinctive design features white concrete forms with curved lines, punctuated by cylindrical columns and dynamic diagonal shapes. The building's architectural character sets a striking contrast against its coastal surroundings, providing a unique backdrop for its tranquil setting.
The renovation brief called for a timeless transformation of the pool, landscape, barbecue, and entertainment areas - spaces designed not only for shelter from the elements but to encourage guests to fully engage with the property’s offerings. The aim was to create an inviting environment where guests could gather, entertain, or unwind in peace and comfort. Challenges included updating the existing pool shell, adjusting floor levels to accommodate the surrounding landscape, and addressing structural issues like the underground car park and deteriorating fencing and waterproofing in the garden.
Matthew’s vision for the renovation was to respect the building's original infrastructure while introducing a refined, contemporary design. His approach was understated yet luxurious - he began by adding shelter through three new roof structures with complementary geometric shapes, and eliminating superfluous decorative details. The material palette was carefully curated, using robust yet subtle finishes in neutral tones, ensuring an elegant contrast that avoided monotony. "I always consider which elements should take center stage,” Matthew explained, “The walls frame the structures, the structures frame the furniture, and the furniture frames the people. In this case, the geometric elegance of the furniture was the final piece of the puzzle." Custom-designed cushions, accessories, and carefully selected plants were added to soften the space, enhancing the serene atmosphere. This thoughtful design has led to increased online bookings, repeat visitors, and an influx of positive feedback.
